Singapore, 22 August 2016 – Illuminate Lighting Design (“Illuminate”) are joining DP Architects to light up the Archifest Pavilion 2016.

In line with the theme of ‘Exhale’ for Archifest 2016, the lighting design consultancy will be working closely with DP Architects to materialise Singapore Institute of Architects (SIA)’s vision of a ‘breathing space’ at the heart of the CBD. This recreational venue and psychedelic urban art sculpture that plays on the interaction of multiple overlapping primary colour layers will stand 22m tall above the ground from 23 September – 9 October 2016 at the Raffles City Zoysia Lawn.

“The design of the pavilion requires integrated lighting that accentuates the colourful fabric envelop while maintaining a soft ambiance in the environment. The purpose of light here is to allow the surrounding community and visitors experience the playful colours and emotion that that light could evoke even in a temporary structure. We are using RGB LED tight beam downlights to introduce a rhythm to the perimeter and then wash lights to the interior creating drama and function whilst complimenting the visual of the pavilion” Simon Berry, Founder of Illuminate, said.

Ang Guo Zi, the lead designer of the winning Pavilion commented, “The pavilion celebrates Singapore’s spirit of progress through continual urban redevelopment in this landmark 10th year of SIA’s Archifest. Construction materials such as scaffolding and safety netting were our medium for exploring how the built environment can positively influence our pace of life, however briefly. The pavilion seeks to create delight, festivity and respite using only construction site material – playfully inverting the connotations construction sites often evoke such as a sense of urgency, dislocation, vague feelings of fatigue and malaise that come with rapidly destroying parts and rebuilding a metropolis. The colourful, ethereal material conveys the transient nature of the Archifest pavilion and our experience of it.”

Professor Richard Ho, Chair of Archifest 2016 Organising Committee said, “One of the primary aims of Archifest is to make architecture more accessible and engaging to everyone. Offering a unique and multi-sensorial experience of the city in the spirit of ‘Exhale’ this year, the psychedelic Archifest Pavilion is set to inspire more people to recognize the profound impact that design and the built environment have on the vitality of the city and our lives.”

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Archifest. This year’s theme, ‘Exhale’, challenges the rapidity and density of activities that define our pace of life. When we exhale completely and let our breath rediscover its own rhythm, we enable ourselves to inhabit the city refreshed. Archifest 2016 seeks to weigh in on the state of Singapore’s built environment and to breathe new life into

The event also marks Illuminate’s first participation at Archifest.
